Excerpt from The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus Thequerbos ofrooeend 1616. The 'edicyones' of Birds end Rowleyere evidentlyto befound in the querto of 616. But the full extent of these additions cannot be absolutely determined by comperison with the earlier quartos. In meny cue: the reading of the letereditionistobepreierred, endit is quite possible that the text hes preserved some oi Marlowe's revision of his own work, end correct versions a mess abridged or incorrectly printed in the earlier quarto} There cenbe little doubt thet the 1604 test does not give us the pleyes Merlowe left it; the reference to 'doeter Lapm' (xiv. 49) is enough to prove the point; in all probability it represents Henslowe's 1594 ecting version. The revisers in 1602 may have had a better text to work upon (poaibly the originel though they certainly eveiled themselves of the printed copy. The problem is still further complicated by the difficulty of determining whet portions of the curlier version ofthedremewerenon-merlowamellthetweknowoi Marlowe's authentic work goes egeinst his authorship of the comic scenes in the first extent edition. It should be noted thet the 1604 end 1616 texts elmost coincide up to the end of Scene vi; from that point onwerd the chenges ere very merited.
