His foft and traéla ble difpolition received the fair impreflion of their judicious precepts, and the abfence of lion might ealily be mifiaken for the firengt of reafon. His preceptors gradually rofe to the rank and confequence of miniliers of ltate and, as they wifely dillembled their fecret au thority, he feemed to aét with firmnefs, with propriety, and with judgment, on the molt im portant occalions of his life and reign. But the inżuence of this elaborate infiruétion did not pe nettate beyond the furface; and the lkilful pre ceptors, who fo accurately guided the lie 5 of their royal pupil, could not infufe into his eeble and indolent character, the vigorous and inde ndeur principle of action, which renders the aborious purfuit of glory elfentially necel'fary to the happinefs, and almofi to the exillence, of the hero. As foon as time and accident had te moved thofe faithful counfellors from the throne, the emperor of the Well infenlibly defcended to the level of his natural genius; abandoned the reins of government to the ambitious.
