Anotace knihy

The economic consequences of terrorism have been subject to academic empirical research since the 1990s. In several cases, the used data about terrorism incidents and economic indicators dates back to 1968. Two types of investigations are characteristic for this field: (1) Quantitative assessments of the impacts of transnational terrorism on either the whole economy or particular economic sectors of a large set of countries over a long time period and (2) case studies focusing on the impacts of a single terrorist event or a defined series of events on the economy of a region, a state, or on a certain economic sector. It is the purpose of this book to provide a deeper insight into the complex relationship between terrorism and the economy. The contributions point out the differences between isolated terrorist attacks, prolonged terrorist campaigns (e.g. Hamas terrorism in Israel, the JI campaign in Indonesia, and Islamist terrorism in the Indian Kashmir region) and terrorist activity in a setting of violent crisis or war (e.g. IS terrorism in Syria and Iraq) with regard to the economic impacts of such attacks or campaigns. Several contributions identify factors that can contribute to a precision regarding the forecast of economic effects of terrorism.
