Anotace knihy

Excerpt from Tales From Shakspeare In the words of the Preface that first accompanied these Tales, they "are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare." Charles and Mary Lamb would have been too modest to think of the need of any preface or introduction to themselves, but their story is such that young and old alike do well to know it, and with it may be told some of the circumstances connected with the writing of the Tales. The Temple, in which Mary Lamb was born in 1764, and Charles in 1775, still stands in the busiest part of busy London, speaking, through its quaint, old-world buildings and gardens and walks, a silent word for all the life that has been lived within it. Some of the first wits of England to-day are among its men of law, as they have been through the present century, as they were in the last, - when, for a single example, Goldsmith lived and died in chambers there, - and at the beginning of the seventeenth, when the earliest recorded performance of "Twelfth Night" was given in one of its Halls. One feels that this was the right place for Charles Lamb to be born in. It is a link between the past he loved so well and the newer age which has learned from him much of its love and understanding of old English letters.
