Excerpt from Sappho: To Which Is Added Between the Flies and the Footlights In the very first words of his first chapter Daudet strikes the key-note of this story of mad infatuation with a touch as firm and sure as Virgil's, in the very first line of The Aeneid indicating the resonant clash of arms and the deeds of a mighty man. What a wealth of suggestion there is in this first chapter, to my mind the best of any in the book! From its opening passages, redolent of rare per fumes, bright with picturesque dresses, the wine bubbling in the glasses, the air charged with waltz music, laughter and song, to the long dreary climb to the garret room in the cold gray light of a day that was dawning fatefully for both lovers, there is not a line that is not well worthy of earnest thought. When we study this and the other chapters of Sappho carefully we are at a loss to determine what has the strongest claim on our admiration. There is above all that marvellous knowledge of human nature and the skill in depict ing it which enabled Daudet to draw characters which, while essentially French, are as familiar to the dweller in London, New York, or Chicago as they are to the absinthe drinker who views life from his chair in front of a Parisian café.
