For connoisseurs of world literature, the novels and short stories of Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-85) stand out as some of the finest prose in Scandinavian Naturalism, admired by prominent writers such as Henrik Ibsen, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Hesse. Yet, also Jacobsen's poetic output, at once both pensive and charged with a daring and delicate symbolism, bears the mark of true genius. With its elements of fragmentation and experimentation, it moreover points beyond its own time toward twentieth-century modernism, and deserves a much wider audience. This volume aims at filling this gap by presenting the very first complete bilingual edition of Jacobsen's mature poetry.
