Through a broadly comparative, historical, and quantitative analysis of electoral behaviour and party systems in Western and Central Eastern Europe since the mid-nineteenth century up to the present, this study reveals the unity of European electorates across countries. Europeanization appears in the cross-country homogeneity of party systems and in the uniform swings of votes. It shows in the correspondence between national arenas and the European Parliament and transpires from the ideological convergence among national parties within the same family. Building on previous work on the nationalization of politics, this groundbreaking book makes the case for Europeanization beyond and before the EU. It illustrates the role of class politics in the formation of a European-wide electorate along ideological rather than territorial lines in the course of the last 150 years. This book makes a significant contribution to electoral and party politics continuing classical studies by Duverger, Schattschneider, Rokkan, Sartori, and Cox.
