Jacopo Peri (1561-1633) is often referred to as the inventor of opera. His single-act tragedy L'Euridice was composed to a libretto by Otavio Rinuccini. The story was taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, although the ending was changed -it was composed for a wedding- so that Orpheus, helped by Venus, is able to regain Euridice from the Underworld. This version, created from a 1967 edition of L'Euridice by Angelo Ephrikian, boasts one of only two complete recordings of the opera, and stars Nerina Santini as Euridice, Rodolfo Faroli as Orpheus and Adele Bona as Venus.
