Though famous for their picturesque nature, the apparent tranquillity of Parkgate and Neston belies their rich and fascinating history. Parkgate grew in importance over the years as a busy port and popular seaside resort, reaching its peak in the eighteenth century. Access to the sea, however, diminished as the River Dee gradually silted up, and the riverbank turned to marshland. Nonetheless, Parkgate continues to attract many visitors to its attractive promenade, lined with quality restaurants and historic buildings. Neston, known as the 'jewel in the crown of Cheshire', is no less interesting. Long established as a market town, the town still plays host to several markets throughout the year, attracting customers from across the surrounding area. Neston, too, possesses many historic buildings, including a fourteenth-century church. Less well-known is the town's mining heritage, with over 300 people employed in the local industry in the 1920s.
