Excerpt from Marlowe's Edward II A Good deal of the material embodied in the Introduction to this volume was originally contained in a doctorate thesis submitted by the author to Harvard University in 1900. Much water, however, has run under the bridge since that year, and the Introduction in its present form is quite different from the thesis. Certain ideas that I then flattered myself were more or less new are now commonplace enough; the 'chronicle history' has been carefully studied in the last few years, and hardly any competent scholar who attentively examines the subject can fail to discover for himself the principal features of its development. I cannot then pretend to offer to the world any large fund of new information. Nevertheless, I venture to print this account of the growth of an interesting and important species of the drama in the hope that the reader will find it to be at least a useful collection of material. The emphasis, for purposes of clear presentation, has been laid upon the development of what is called 'form.' Quite obviously there is no fixed line to be drawn between form and content, and the distinction represents an abstraction from the facts for scientific convenience.
