The Royal Burgh of Linlithgow was once the principal town of Linlithgowshire, now West Lothian. Its main historic attraction is the ruined Linlithgow Palace, which was the birthplace of James V and Mary, Queen of Scots. The remains, which stand at the heart of the town in front of Linlithgow Loch, dominate the town, while the adjacent St Michael's parish church, established in 1138, is one of the largest burgh churches in the whole of Scotland. Papermaking was formerly an important industry in the area and to the east of the town there was once a whisky distillery. From 1822, the Forth & Clyde Canal linked the town to Edinburgh and Glasgow and saw much success, until the coming of the Glasgow & Edinburgh Railway in 1842. Today, Linlithgow is a thriving commuter town, lying on the main rail line to Glasgow and only twenty miles from Edinburgh, as well as a popular tourist destination.
