Anotace knihy

Excerpt from Immigration Abuses Glimpses of Hungary and Hungarians a Narrative of the Experiences of an American Immigrant Inspector, While on Duty in Hungary, Together With a Brief Review, of That Country's History and Present Troubles When a little over three years ago I had been entrusted with the important work of "Special Immigrant Inspector," and sent abroad with a view of gathering information to be of use and of service to my government, which had appointed me, I had but one sole and exclusive desire, namely, to do my work faithfully. To say the least, I honestly believe I did all that my superiors had a right to expect of me. That I would be confronted with the obstacles which were hurled into my path, I could not possibly conceive. That I would be made to suffer gross indignities in the land of my birth, because corrupt officials were under the impression that my investigations, resulting in discoveries which shed the proper light upon them, laying bare conditions shameful and disgraceful in my old home, ought not to be exposed, because a certain feeling of love so inspiringly and beautifully described in the lines of Scott, beginning thus: "Breathes there a man with soul so dead," would cause me to be less faithful, less loyal, less true to my official oath, and that I would allow myself to be used by them for the advancement of their nefarious practices by believing what they told me, I certainly never dreamed. And, I am not ashamed to confess, had I only dreamed of it I should have preferred to be assigned to another branch of the service.
