For those of us who can think back to Wales in the 1970s, a lot seems familiar enough. The same mountains and rivers, of course. Lots and lots of history. There was plenty of development along the southern and northern coasts, with mainly grass and sheep in between. In many other ways, though, that era now seems almost unrecognisably distant. These were the days before S4C (opened in 1982) and devolution - indeed the proposals considered in the 1979 referendum were defeated. There were huge changes to the coal and steel industries. In 1970 the NCB had over 60,000 miners in South Wales alone. Steelworks in the same year included names like Shotton, Ebbw Vale, DuPort and East Moors. This is a book of many of the photographs which Richard Gaunt took in the 1970s which pick up some of the everyday details which caught his eye as the decades' changes swirled around. He had already developed an interest in taking images of day-to-day life in industrial areas. When he moved to Wales he was mindful that demolition or redevelopment was on its way to various places near where he lived and worked, and set out to picture some before it was too late. By the end of the 1970s he had accumulated several thousand black and white negatives on these themes. These are the best of those Images. This stunning book of photographs celebrates his time in Wales. Alongside the industrial scenes - with all their stark, grim beauty - we see the coastal and rural county throughout a period of intense change, captured in superb monochrome.
