Excerpt from Highway of Sorrow: At the Close of the Nineteenth Century I have written "The Highway of Sorrow" in collaboration with a well-known Russian author, now an exile in England, who has supplied me with the outlines of the story; especially with the prison and Siberian incidents, which he assures me are founded on facts. It would have been impossible for me to have done this work without help as complete as that which he has rendered. For information about Stundism, its simple tenets and humble organisation - for it is embraced only by the peasants - I am indebted to an anonymous pamphlet, entitled "The Stundists," opportunely published by the proprietors of The Christian World just as I was beginning my task.
