This book investigates the changing opportunity structure in education for different social groups during China's transition from a socialist regime to a market economy. The first part provides an in-depth historical and comparative analysis of the long-term development of the idea of meritocracy in China, and in more recent Western thought. The second part then explores the recent higher education reforms in China, the part played by a supposedly meritocratic form of selection, and implications for social mobility in China.
