Excerpt from Heroidum Epistulae XIII: Edited With Notes and Indices Tristia 3, 7 has been generally set down as addressed to his daughter. And her name Perilla rests on the authority of that elegy. Mr Church has expressed some doubt as to this: and indeed the expressions in it are not so warm as one would expect from a father to an only daughter. The recollections which he calls up are chieży literary. He reminds her of the interest he had taken in her culture and her attempts in poetry. He urges her to keep up all innocent and liberal tastes, and declares that amidst all his own sorrows and losses poetry has been a comfort of which no Caesar could deprive him.
