Excerpt from Heidentum, Christentum, Judentum, Vol. 2: Ein Bekenntnisbuch Züchtigung verdient. Man muß doch fühlen, daß jeder Zusatz, jede Änderung, die in die Atmosphäre dieser Dichtung eintritt, nichts erreicht, als sich selbst hoffnungslos zu kom promittieren. Also keine Umdichtung, von vornherein schwebte mir nichts als eine Umstellung der Verse vor. Bei der Arbeit (die weniger Arbeit war als ein Dahingleiten in lustvollen Ahnungen) beschloß ich, zu nächst keinen wissenschaftlichen Apparat zu benützen, die Resultate der Kritik erst nachträglich kennen zu lernen. Ich strebte nichts anderes an als "dichterische Wahr scheinlichkeit. Gelang es, durch bloße Um ordnung (ohne Zusatz, Weglassung oder so genannte Emendation) ein in sich sinnvolles Ganzes herzustellen, so lag wohl einige Mög lichkeit vor, daß man der Urgestalt nahe gekommen war. Eine zweite Angelegen heit wäre es dann, zu erklären, aus welchen Gründen statt der Urgestalt der heute vor liegende Text überliefert worden ist.
