The Web has shaped new forms of communication with profound impacts on our societies, making information readily accessible to individuals all over the world. In most cases this has been of great benefit to society, however, there times where it has caused needless complication and harm. Human transactions - of knowledge, goods, and services - have intensified as a result of the Web in ways that were previously not possible. For many, these transactions represent a revolution in communication technology akin to Guttenberg's printing press and Claude Shannon's information theory. As a result, the Web has become a driver of technology; as the number of users increases, so does the demand for more powerful web-based services. From this milieu of social and technological change, Web Science has emerged as a new multidisciplinary field to study the Web in all of its aspects, including those that engage with engineering, governance, and society. It is the goal of this book to explore these concepts in a broad lens to a broad set of academics, including engineers, medical doctors, and scientists.
