Dies ist der zweite Band zu den deutschen Surveys und Ausgrabungen von Gadara nach Studien zum spätkaiserzeitlichen Bogenmonument [OrA 21], dem als nächstes Publikationen zu den hellenistischen Stadtmauern und zum Trikonchosareal folgen werden. Die Stadt erlebte ein lang anhaltendes Wachstum und plötzlichen Niedergang mit einem Wandel von einer hellenistischen Kuppenfestung zu einer römisch-spätantiken Straßensiedlung. Das Buch enthält ein Vorwort der Herausgeber, fünf Aufsätze, eine umfassende Bibliographie [Bührig], ein Autorenverzeichnis sowie eine topographische Bestandskarte Stand 2012. Die Beiträge befassen sich mit dem Stand der Forschungen des DAI zu Gadara als hellenistisch-kaiserzeitlicher Stadt der südsyrischen Dekapolis [Hoffmann], der Bedeutung topographischer Bestandskarten für die archäologische Forschung am Beispiel der Karten von Gadara [Bührig], Amphorenstempeln aus Gadara [Joehrens], hellenistischer und römischer Feinkeramik Gadaras anhand stratifizierter Fundensembles und ihrer Aussagekraft für die Periodisierung des Platzes von der Seleukidenzeit bis zum Ersten Jüdischen Aufstand [Konrad] sowie den Fundmünzen [Noeske]. This is the second volume on the German field walking and excavation campaigns at Gadara after a book on the Late Roman Imperial arched monument [OrA 21] which are to be followed by publications on the Hellenistic city walls and the Trikonchos area. The city experienced long-lasting growth and a sudden decline including transformation from a Hellenistic hilltop fortress to a Roman-Late Antique roadside settlement. The book contains a foreword by the editors, five papers, a comprehensive bibliography [Bührig], a list of authors and a topographical inventory map of 2012. The contributions deal with the present state of research by the German Archaeological Institute at Gadara as a Hellenistic and Roman Imperial town of the Southern Syrian dekapolis [Hoffmann], the significance of topographical inventory maps in archaeological research by the example of the Gadara maps [Bührig], amphora stamps from Gadara [Joehrens], Hellenistic and Roman fine wares from Gadara on the basis of stratified find complexes and their evidence for the periodisation of the site from Seleucid times until the first Jewish rebellion [Konrad] as well as the coins [Noeske].
