Anotace knihy

The Kibrya-Olbasa region, in the uplands of southwest Anatolia, was home to a mixture of peoples - Kabalians, Milyans, Pisidians and others - while the city of Kibrya spoke four languages: Lydian, Solymian, Pisidian and Greek. On this rich substratum of indigenous elements the dominant cultures of the Hellenistic kingdoms and the Roman empire were overlaid, and the inscriptions of the area well display the processes of Hellenization and Romanization. This volume presents (with text, translation and brief commentary) some 160 ancient stones and inscriptions recorded by the late Alan Hall in 1984 and 1985. Over a hundred are previously unpublished, others are fully revised. Among the many simple epitaphs of the Roman period are inscriptions recording a Hellenistic royal letter, regulations for the Roman water supply of Kibrya, and an imperial enquiry into oppressive treatment of villagers. In addition, all published inscriptions from the area covered are listed with their place of publication, and the index of names covers these as well as the fully presented texts. A companion volume being prepared by G.H.R. Horsley and R.A. Kearsley will present the inscriptions in the Burdur Museum, mainly from the area to the north of that covered here.
