Stroke is the leading cause of neurological morbidity and mortality and the third leading cause of mortality worldwide. In spite of several advances over the past two decades in acute stroke management, stroke prevention and neuroprotection, there is no clear consensus in any of the areas of diagnosis and management. The complex interplay between treatment modalities and the individual patient makes each case quite unique and physicians need to walk the tightrope of balancing the subtle and complicated see-saw of evidence and experience-based medicine.
