Based on extensive interviews conducted specifically for this book, Tessa Dunlop tells the story of The Bletchley Girls through the lives of fifteen women who were all selected to work in Britain's most secret World War Two organisation - Bletchley Park. Many were just school girls at the outbreak of war; the next six years would change their lives forever. This vivid portrayal of their experiences, sacrifices and memories is a poignant reminder that without the work of thousands of young women Bletchley Park's extraordinary achievements would not have been possible. Many women had already volunteered for service, but in December 1941, for the first time in British history women were conscripted. Of those women over seven thousand were hand-picked to work at Bletchley Park and its outstations. There had always been women at the Park but soon they outnumbered the men four to one. A refugee from Belgium, a Scottish debutante, a Jewish 14 year old, a factory worker from Northamptonshire - the Bletchley Girls all have their own, often traumatic stories of how they came to serve their country and the impact that service had on the rest of their lives. In the middle of the night hunched over meaningless pieces of paper, tending mind-blowing machines, sitting listening for hours on end, theirs was invariably monotonous meticulous work about which they could not breathe a word.
