Will, an American soldier, finds a little dog named Beko while walking through a deserted French village during World War I. He talks softly to the dog and finds that he's injured, but Will wins the dog's trust by giving him a piece of cheese. When they arrive back at camp, he gives the dog to a medic so his injuries can be properly treated. At first, the little dog doesn't to follow commands, but a French soldier, called a "poilu", helps Will understand it is because Beko understands French and not English. The French soldier, explains that he believes Beko was a messenger dog for a French unit. Soon, little Beko is catching rats, relaying messages, and keeping the soldiers company. He even joins the soldiers for a night patrol, and that's when the dog proves his true worth. With a page of military terms and a guide on how to pronounce French words, Beko's story celebrates the bond between people and animals as well as the true meaning of friendship.
