This year represents the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Leopardi. Many Irish poets think of Leopardi as one of Europe's greatest poets. In his time he was a European star, and for the Italians, along with Dante and Petrarch, he remains one of their most beloved poets. He died in 1837, at the age of thirty-eight, after a brief, tragic career. It's impossible to think of modern Italian poetry as a whole, or such major figures as Ungaretti, Montale, and Quasimondo, without thinking of the lyric power of Leopardi's finest poems. To celebrate Leopardi's poetry, editor Marco Sonzogni, professor of Italian at Trinity College, invited Ireland's best poets, men and women, young and old, to write a poem "responding" to one of Leopardi's poems. The result is this ambitious collection, a virtual who's who of contemporary Irish poets, in which nearly one-hundred pay homage to the works of a master.
