Anotace knihy

In bringing the different voices together within the confines of text, Sorariba celebrates the feast of diverse social, cultural, and political discourses of Papua New Guinea. Nash Sorariba's collection of short stories is the first single collection by an individual author, representing a cross-section of themes addressed as pertinent issues in Papua New Guinea. The collection is superb, featuring previously published stories as well as Sorariba's new work. The stories are exciting, provocative and sensitive. The reader should find familiar experiences. Sorariba has excellent craftsmanship of lively narrative construction. He builds up suspense that gradually leads to a resolution at the end of the story. Although, strictly speaking, the structure in Sorariba's stories is not pyramidal, it is nevertheless more like a Pythagorean theorem. The beginning of the story is equalled by the height and width of the theorem, so to speak. There is a gradual build-up of conflicting situations (gradient) that leads to a climax that drops so suddenly, rather than as a gradual gradient as expected in a traditional short story structure. Sorariba's work has depth and texture. On the surface Sorariba gives us a good story. Beneath that lays an array of discourses that undercuts the discursive formations of the society. Sorariba has certainly situated himself within the nexus of time and place in the history of Papua New Guinea. Sorariba's writing proves that Papua New Guinean literature has not waned, but is taking a new course in its literary history. -- Steven Edmund Winduo
