Anotace knihy

Excerpt from A Man of Devon For one the downs by the cliff, all gorse and ferns, have a touch of wildness. At the end of the combe is a sandy cove with a shelf of black rock on one side, pinky-grey cliffs right away to the Head on the other, and a coastguard station above it. Just now, with the harvest coming on, everything is at its richest, the apples ripening, the trees almost over loaded with green. It's very hot, still weather; the country and sea seem to slumber under the sun. In front of the farm are half-a-dozen stone-pines that look as if they had stepped out of another part of the world, but all round the back the orchard is as lush, gnarled, and orthodox as one could desire. The house, a long, lone white building with three levels of roof, and splashes of brown about it, looks as if it might be growing down into the earth; the apple-trees overhang it like hair on a face. A fresh straw thatch was put on two years ago - but that's the only new thing about it; they say the front door, oak, with iron knobs, is at least three hundred years old. Of course you can touch the ceilings with your hand, and the windows certainly might be larger - a heavenly old place, with a żavour of age, apples, smoke, sweetbrier, bacon, honeysuckle, and, once again, age, all over it.
