She was a Woman of incomparable Virtue and Goodnefs (g), and by her Mr. Had two Sons and one Daughter. The eldelt Son was john, the Subjeft of the prefent Hifiory the younger CH ristopher, who being defign'd for the fiudy ofthe common Law Of England, was enter'd young a Student of the inner-temple, of which Houfe he liv'd to be an ancient Bencher, and kept clofe to that Study and Profeflioh all his Life-time, except during the civil Wars in England when he adher'd to the royal Caufe, and became obnoxious to the Parlament by aéiing to the utmolh of his power againż: them, fo long as he kept his Station at Reading in Ber/é fhz're, and therefore as foon as that Town was taken by the parlament-forces, he was Oblig'd to quit his Houfe there, and l'teer'd his Courfe according to the motion of the King's Army. When the War was ended, and his Compo fition made thro' his Brother's Intereft with the then prevailing Powers, he betook himfelf again to his former Study and Profeżion, following Chamber Praéiice every Term; yet came to no Advancement in a long time, except a fmall Employment in the Town of Ipfwieh, where and near it he fpent all the latter time of his Life. In the beginning of the Reign of King 7alnes II. He was recommended by fome Perfons of Qiality to his Majei'ty and at a call of fur Serjeants received the Coif, and the fame day was fworn one of the Barons of the Exchequer (h), and knighted (i) 3 and foon after made one of the Judges of the Common Pleas. But his Years and Indifpofition rendering him unable to bear the Fatigue of public Employment, he continued not long in either of thofe Sta tions; but Obtaining his aetur, retir'd to a Country Life, his Study,and Devo~ tion (h). Mr. Toland tells us (i), that Sir Chri/topher was Ofa very fuperliitious Nature, and a Man of no Parts or Ability, and that King j'ames II. Want ing a Set of yudges, that would declare his hvill to hefuperz'or to our legal Con/ti tntion, appointed him one of the Barons of the Exchequer. But Mr. Philip: (m) reprefents him as a Perfon of a nzodefl quiet Temper, preferring f7uflz'ee and Virtue htfore all worldly Plea/are or Grandeur; and affures us, that he was re commended to that King by fome Perfons of quality, for his known Integrzty and dhility in the Law. Anne, the only Daughter of Mr. Yohn Milton the Elder, had a confiderable Portion given her by her Father, in marriage with Mr. Edward Philips, Son Of Mr. Edward Phils of Shrewrhury, who coming up to London young, was enter'd into the crown'ohice in Chancery, and at length became Secondary of that Office under Mr. Bemho. By him {he had, befrdes other Children, who died Infants, two Sons, 7ohn and Edward. She married for her fecond Hufband Mr. Thomas żgar, who, upon the Death of his intimate Friend Mr. Philips, fucceeded him In his place, whichhe held for many Years, and left to Mr. Thomas Milton, Son of Sir Chriżopher. He had by mr.phi/ip5's Widow two Daughters, Mary, who died very young, and Anne, who was living in the Year 1694. (n).
